REAL WORLD CYBER TERRORISM

You will read about all kinds of terrorist acts taking place all around the world. The news headlines haven't yet made the connection between this real world violence and the cyber attacks that take place everyday through our computers email and the constant evasive popup ads and virus' that plague the computers in our home and businesses.

The definition of terrorism according to Merriam-Webster is:

  • "the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion."

And they define "terror" as:

  • "a state if intense fear"… "one that inspires fear, a frightening aspect, a cause of anxiety"… "violent of destructive acts…committed by groups in order to intimidate a population of government into granting their demands…"

The synonym for terror is fear. Fear is "an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger" which in most cases is caused by the unknown aspect of the looming danger.

Mention terrorism today and the immediate thoughts are:

  • The war in Iraq
  • Atomic threats in both Iraq and Korea
  • Suicide bombings

These concepts were all considered distance threats for Americans until 9/11.

But, for Information Technology professionals Cyber Terrorism has been a reality since its beginnings. Virus' that compromised their systems and the confidential data they held were the beginnings of a very creative and unrelenting information war.

Remember the movie from the early 80's called "War Games". A teenage boy connected to the United States Government's military defense computer system and started playing a war simulation game with the system. The system started a real life simulation.

Today this type of computer compromise occurs daily. We read about it in the news and hear about it on the Television and Radio.

Today personal and confidential information is stored on computer systems, not only at the business level, it reaches to homes, PDA and Pocket PC's, and now even to our Blackberry's and phones. We have become a technological society that is dependant on technology for our everyday lives.

As technology has advanced, has our knowledge of it also advanced? Or have we barely kept up with understanding how to use it?

Personal
ACCOUNTIBILITY
IN THE
COMPUTER AGE!

Man's advent of technology made life easier for the masses. It also created the necessity to responsibly learn how to protect ones self, family, and business from those who might use that technology to hurt or exploit us.

This responsibility to protect ourselves and our families falls on the user of technology not its maker or its exploiter.
